Google has always been keen to grab the desktop screen real estate from Microsoft. Now Google plans to go head-to-head with Microsoft in the Desktop Operating Systems area.
The Register wrote that Google is building an operating system based on Ubuntu (which in turn is based on Debian and Gnome). "..Google plans to distribute it to the general public, as a free alternative to Windows.."
The GoogleOS project is internally known as Goobuntu. While Goobuntu has no meaning, "Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others". Ubuntu also means "I am what I am because of who we all are".
However, Chris, Open Source Program Manager at Google, denied the GoogleOS rumor - "Goobuntu is our internal desktop distribution. It's awesome, but we're not going to be releasing it."
But even if Google is denying plans to distribute a version of the
Linux-based operating system Ubuntu outside Googleplex, the fact that it uses Linux internally would certainly boost the adoption of Linux distributions especially the Ubuntu distro.
The Goobuntu.com domain has been registered in the past couple of days, though presumably not by Google.
