Walt Mossberg - Yahoo! Mail Better Than Google GMail or Hotmail

Not sure if everyone here will agree but Walt Mossberg of WSJ says that the new Yahoo! Mail is better than Google email and the new Windows Live Hotmail.

Walt favors Yahoo! over other web email programs because Yahoo! offers unlimited storage space, it lets you send SMS messages to cell phones, has a tabbed interface and lets you drag-n-drop email messages into mail folders just like Microsoft Outlook.

The new Yahoo! mail is no doubt a big improvement but the downside is that you have to pay an yearly fee of $20 to get your mail out of Yahoo! service - GMail POP3 access and Hotmail-Outlook Connector are free.

The author's article on WSJ was from a single perspective. Personally, I still feel gmail's web browser is superior. I like how it organizes messages in a single thread. I'm part of several list servs, and I'd rather have all my conversations be in one email than in 30 separate message in my inbox.

Also, the author focused on yahoo's web client behaving more like a PC application. This is what is making the application slower. Unless yahoo finds away to stream line it then yahoo mail will continue o be slow. Google has had this problem with google documents; it is great you can right click and get the same options you would see in excel, but the web application can be brutally slow.

Hey Amit;
I guess you are aware of http://ypopsemail.com ;-)

Yeah, self promotion indeed :-)

Save yourself a visit to ypopsemail.com unless you want some idiotic popups resize your browser, make it full screen and other crap.

I think the feature of sending SMS from Yahoo mail is still not available to all. I read about it a couple of days back. When I logged into my Yahoo mail (Beta) now, the option of "Send SMS" was missing. - Vinay

I'm not sure where the author is coming from. Everything in his article points to disadvantages about yahoo mail except

1) Ability to use right click to get a shortcut menu.
In gmail you can use shortcut keys which are even faster.
2) Having tabs within the email program.
Why is this necessary when both firefox and IE have tabbed browsing built into the browser
3) Having a preview pane like outlook.
IMHO this is a very dubious feature since you can only "preview" 1 email at a time in this pane. What you are actually doing is reading 1 email at a time, not previewing them.
4) Ability to use text messaging to cellphones.

On the downside are
1) 1/2 the limit on attachement size
2) Annoying banner ads all over the place unless you pay up.
3) And it's very slow (and I don't think it's due to the banner ads alone).

In short Yahoo mail has some highly dubious advantages over gmail, but where it matters it falls short.
