How to Convert Windows Media WMV to Flash Video FLV files

Über podcaster Kamla Bhatt is looking for some free software to convert windows media files into Flash video formats. Here are some good options:

Online Conversion

Zamzar.com, MUX and Hey! Watch are online video encoding services that virtually support all video formats including AVI, QuickTime MOV and iPod video M4V.

Just upload a video file that you want to convert and within minutes, you get a link in your inbox to download the converted video. Works on all platforms since they are browser based services.

Alternatively, upload the video to Blip.TV, our favorite video website, and they'll automatically convert the wmv file into flv for you. The advantage here is that the converted video will stay online forever and remains available for instant sharing with your friends.

Desktop Conversion

SUPER is a free desktop software to convert video files from one video format to another. The program also supports batch conversion so you can add multiple video in a queue and quickly grab a cup of coffee while the program converts them to the desired format.

Another recommended software is On2 Flix which is one of the best Flash video tools in the market. Flix can convert video to either FLV or SWF formats. You can save the audio separately in MP3 or WAV formats. Infact, the VP6 video codec used in Adobe Flash 8 is also developed by On2.

Update: Brian Alves and Mike Hurdle also discuss video conversion software in their weekly podcast - The DV Show.

Hi Amit, this is the best blog on technology. I like your lucid writing style and I've found many of your tips very useful. Just keep this great blog going.

Thanks thanks and thanks. I was recently pulling my hair out over this. Riva FLV encoder refuses to convert the WMV files that I create through Windows Movie Maker. So I had to upload the videos to either Photobucket (which inflated the resultant FLV's size multiple times the original WMV) or use Esnips (only a little better). Upload, download and then again upload at a place with high enough bandwidth. Whoof!

Now I'll try your tips out.

I just tried SUPER but got annoyed by two things:
(1) it wanted to access the internet and if not, it didn't run from the start.
(2) after adding a 5.2MB swf in the list, and then it stocked. Used lots of CPU resources but couldn't do anything.
Is this software safe?
