The Orkut group in question (We hate India) , which has 100+ members mostly from Pakistan, shows a bunch of people burning the Indian Flag, something that has been taken very seriously an Indian court.
Since Orkut is owned by Google, the court has asked the state government to issue a notice to Google for alleged spread of hatred about India. The case is likely to come up next month.

I think if at all they delete this community, there are few more communities doing stuff like this. I had seen communities / profiles created against Hindu gods like Shankar, Ganpati and others too.

Orkut does delete these communities because it does not meet some min. no. of bogus reports.
But I personally think, Orkut or google should have a representative in each country handling these kind of stuff and these kind of things should be stopped immidiately after creation.

yup...its already being spread all over orkut and I also had reported this community about a month back. But since then they haven't taken any action. Hope so after ur post, this community comes into eyes of Google and bans it...even the users.

What's the fuss! I am flooded with emails asking me to report these communities as Bogus. With 4-5 members, these communities are pathetic. Why even worry. Hindus have to avoid going all Islamist way when they fume over all and sundry. Court is perhaps unaware that it is impossible to monitor such communities!

I personally do not think it is impossible, it is pretty easy to find these community for a normal user so why it is so difficult for google?
Hire a person foro each country, make the person check manually the stuff every 15 days or whatever time period they want and delete the crap.
I know there will be arguments that it is freedom of speech and they should be allowed whatever they want but I think there is limit in the freedom of "freedom of speech"
By taking the name of freedom of speech, people just cant start community and abuse anyone.
I think these community should be deleted no matter how many members are there, no matter if they affect xx person or not but this is against the country so it should probably go into trash...

Ludicrous.. I'm a muslim, and I don't hate India, neither does all muslims or maybe all the Pakistanis out there. I found the idea of social networking sites being overrun with Brazilian spammers quite unacceptable, and so I left orkut (and also hi5,friendster and all that other jazz). Clearly, an orkut community alone can't defame a country with rich heritage and somewhat a stable communal structure (I mean "things" happen now and then, its perfectly normal that riots occur). I think the creating of a community in orkut and other such social networking sites should go through an initial moderation. Where maybe google can create a filter that disallows communities with questionable content.

Well, I think Google should have looked and taken care of such communities much before. Sure Google has a "Report as Bogus" link, but a more sensible "report as offensive or abusive" link would have done more good. I've seen other hate sites too on google and they are only helping google on the wrong foot. Orkut is really good and I'll miss it very much if its banned or something like that happens to it for its own stupidity and indifference. Thanks

Anyone on orkut can come up with a community in seconds. To blame orkut for a community that was created by users is to sidetrack the issue and let the true offenders go free. Like Arnie said, I really love the communities feature and would sorely miss it, if its banned. Whereas these idiots who made the community in the first place would move on to create a similar ruckus somewhere else.
We should be targetting the offenders and not the medium...
