Google Opens Orkut Gates: No Invitation Required To Join Orkut
You no longer require an invitation from an existing member to join Orkut - Google, apparently inspired by Facebook, has opened Orkut to everyone today. [Hat Tip: Dreamchaser]
Google already displays advertisements in the Orkut community pages and by opening the service to public, the real estate for advertising could increase several folds as we will see millions of new users joining Orkut and creating new communities.

It didn't work for me.
I'm thinking it could've been just up long enough to get some more folks in the door, then they shut it again. They do that to get more beta users for some of their services. That could be what they did with orkut.

Mac - Are you not seeing a "Join Now" link on Orkut page - it's somewhere at the bottom.
If not, I guess they are opening up the service in phases.
Even I guess, that it is not working fine. I've tried to get the sign up screen but it didnt work. I already have the service but wanted to check it still [you know it why..dont you :)]
It may be that they must have opened it for sometime but then they must have closed it, may be just to check the popularity of orkut :D.
I've also seen many changes in the orkut like making reply to scarps easily and some similar changes.

you folks must be kidding....it is working just fine for me....I have created 3 orkut accounts without any invite.....lol
Not working for me, tried different ways, but zilch.

It worked fine for me. But btw I think everyone has a friend on orkut, one can easily get an invite
I am in the US as well. It lets me log in with google account, and then wants me to link with an Orkut account, and I dont have one, so I click "Don't have an orkut account?" link. And I get the message basically saying you need an invite.
Brazil here and It's not working this way for me.
The registration link is still live and open for public. I checked couple of minutes back to confirm this!

followed the link at the bottom of the post. tried just now. didnt work. says i need an invite. i am in malaysia.
Invitation failed
The reason might be one of the following:
You entered a wrong email address
You have not enabled JavaScript on your browser
Your browser is not accepting cookies
You already accepted the invitation and signed up
The url specified is invalid
If you are using Hotmail, you may need to copy and paste this URL into a new Internet Explorer window
If you know someone who is a member of orkut, have them invite you to join.
AKA no go
