The online video sharing space has exploded in the recent months with the entry of new players like Metacafe, Blip.tv, Revver, Yahoo Videos and so on. Millions of video clips, technology shows, music albums, movie trailers are available on these video sites for online viewing or they can also be downloaded to your hard drive for offline viewing.

It has fast becoming the web standard for delivering online video (replacing Apple QuickTime, AVI, Windows Media and Real rm formats) because Flash Video can be viewed inside Macromedia Flash Players which is shipped by default with most web browsers. Hence, an intelligent approach would be save the files in such a manner that it becomes obvious even for a layman to understand what the video is all about.
Try to include a short context and duration of the video in the name. For instance, the Google Factory Tour video is 5hours, 39minutes and 41seconds long. You can save it as Google_Factory_Tour_053941.flv or GoogleFactoryTour_053941.flv.
Such files are easy to find later using desktop search programs. Alternatively, if you have the time and energy, the FLV Meta Data Injector can insert additional meta data into FLV files. It's a free command line utility. [Watch Video Tutorial]

This is the most common question among video enthusiasts - they want to split a large FLV video file into smaller chunks for editing or resharing only the interesting tidbits on the internet. To break an FLV file, get the free FLV Parser - a tiny command-line tool to split FLVs into pieces. Its intended use is to convert a large FLV into a series of shorter FLVs based on a series of millisecond-based timecodes. Using the -s switch will split the audio and video of the outputted files; the audio track will be extracted as a series of MP3 files, and the short FLVs produced will have no audio track at all.

I don't like the FLV Video Player provided by Google Video. Can I create my custom skin for embedding the video clip ?
The problem with official video players, like the ones provided by YouTube or Metacafe, is that they cannot be customized and the embedded video content is completely contolled by the video hosting site. You cannot personalize the layout of the FLV players like the color settings, logos, etc.
Hence the best solution is to get your creative juices flowing and design the skin of the FLV player yourself. Instructions are available at Adobe Website. You may have to have to download trial version of Macromedia Dreamweaver and Flash Professional software for this trick to work.

Great post on YouTube and Google Video. However, I'm surprised that you havent included Revver. Sure, it's not as popular as YouTube but you get 20% off the profits they make on advertising on your videos! That's completely unsurpassed. Additionally, with YouTube's new licensing agreement, I think a large chunk of YouTube fans are going to be downloading their videos off YouTube and uploading them onto Revver. Just my two cents.
Oh and, while you're reading this, check out my blog =). It's new but, it's developing.
Wow, I really loved that! I've been meaning to create an amv or something, but MovieMaker always seemed so daunting. With this FLV clipping and whatnot, it doesn't sound so bad. Might give it a shot after all.
Hi Amit,
Very Informative Article. One problem though. Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer software from Super Which you have mentioned, doesnt have the download link. It somehow always direct me to the link http://www.erightsoft.net/Superdc.html. Please help me out. You can email me at sanmank@yahoo.com.
Thanks for the info and links but what about those FLV files that have been encoded with On2 VP6. How can you edit these?

Either that, or you can just download VDownloader and save the hassle of splitting flash files and converting them with third-party players. Simply use VDownloader! http://www.freewarefiles.com/program_5_173_23255.html
MPlayer is a free player for many platforms that can decode and play FLV files. I haven't tried it yet, but I suspect it uses a lot less CPU resources than Flash based players.
Great post .It is really helpful for video newbees.
*extremely helpful*. however, i'm running into one glitch in the last step. when i use super to convert flv to avi and then try to import into premiere, i'm getting an error message: "unsupported compression in file." so i'm not sure how to configure settings in SUPER before doign conversion. I've tried H.263, H.264, and some other variants...
I prefer video instead of reading all the text, hmmm...
it will be preferable to watch video on how to save the video
we like as an FLV file.
Thanks in advance.

K-Lite mega codec pack includes a flv decoder for enabling flv movies to open in windows media player by default...perhaps the codec should be available individually too...but this pack includes way too many codecs.

I came across Wimpy flv player for the pc yesterday and I can thoroughly recommend it. You are able to maximise the screen and it works fast, so I assume it doesn't require a lot of memory to run.

Hi I found your site very pertinent to problems I'm having with Flash. Thanks. Only problem is the first time I opened the trail of RIVA, it said the trail period was over and offered to sell. I never was able to use if once. Maybe you should warn your readers.
Thanks for all your help in the other areas.

You have been giving excellent tips and this article is no exception.
Perhaps, you can provide a way to achieve the following:
having downloaded several FLV clips from youtube and having joined them as per your tips above, the question is how to watch them on the TV by transferring them on a CD-RW.
In what format should the FLV files be converted, with which freeware and how to transfer them on to CD-RW to put in DVD video equipment and watch on the TV?
I tried transfering these on DVD by using DVD flick and burning on a CD-RW, but the CD does not open and the DVD player says "cannot play this disc"
Thanks for any ideas.
Another point to my above comment is that in converting the flv files to dvd format, the file size grows enormously big.
The two files totalling 62 mb that I converted, became 2.3 GB and on one CD-RW, only about one third could be accomoodated, using DVD flick.
Thanks
Dvd players dont read flv files, however Dvd players now can read .avi files so u have to convert ur flv files to .avi so u canwatch them on dvdplayers,
btw
howdo you use the dvdparser?
Very nice post. I like how you put YouTube and Google things together.
I still can't figure out how, if it is humanly possible, to view Youtube videos on the Windows Media Player. Anyone know how to do this?????
This may sound stupid but could someone tell me how I can join FLV videos with Macromedia Flash? I have Flash CS3 but I don't know how to do this. Thanks!
