Microsoft today released a preview of the Windows Desktop Search 3 engine. But before you download WDS 3.0 assuming it to be a natural upgrade to Windows Desktop Search 2.6.5, here's a word of caution.
Microsoft has clearly said that users of earlier versions of Windows Desktop Search should not upgrade to this release unless directed to by Outlook 2007, OneNote 2007 or another application.
WDS 3.0 installs as a Windows Service and can be used only by applications like Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 and Office OneNote 2007 to index content and show results when searching within an application.
WDS 3.0 is meant only for searching from desktop applications and does not include UI. The next beta release of WDS 3.0 will include end-user UI to allow searching over all indexed content from a single place.
