Corel acquires the most profitable shareware - Winzip

Winzip, the synonym for "file compression" and one of the most successful shareware programs ever, is now a part of Corel, developers of popular graphics software like Bryce, Painter and CorelDRAW.

And if you thought that nobody is Winzip because Windows XP has built-in compression tools, look at their sales figure. Winzip, that pops only a startup screen for unregistered users, generated more than $20 million in revenue last year alone. These impressive sale figures are despite the number of free alternatives like 7-zip and PKZip

As part of the Corel family, WinZip's 38 developers will continue to work on Winzip for Windows from Corel's Mansfield, CT office. Yes, shareware too can make money.
