There's a good chance that the animation or cartoon game you want to download was created using Flash. Use these tips for downloading Flash files from the Internet to your hard drive. You save all Flash animations from web pages, including Flash websites, Flash game, Flash Animations, Flash Tutorials, Flash Movie Trailers, Flash Advertisements, or what ever Flash files you find in the web.
Shockwave Games, Website elements, Screencasts (software demos) created in Macromedia Flash (swf) always fascinate me. I generally like to save these flash files embedded in webpages to my hard-drive for offline viewing. But saving flash animations from websites is not so easy. Macromedia Flash player context menu has no option to download or save the Flash movie from the web browser. The right-click context menu of most browsers won't work on Flash objects. So I will share some techniques (work-arounds) to save flash files from Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer (IE), Opera or MyIE2 web browsers.
1. Saving Flash files from Firefox
Firefox for Newbies
a. Click Tools - Page Info
b. Click the Media Tab on the Page Info Windows
c. The media tab has a complete list (with preview) of Images, CSS Files and Shockwave Flash files that were downloaded by the Firefox browser while rendering (loading) the page.
d. Scroll down the list and locate the swf file.
e. Click the "Save As" button. Select some directory on your hard drive and save the file (No need for a third-party plug-in)
Firefox for Geeks and Power Users
a. Type about:blank in the Firefox address bar
b. Now click List cache entries or directly type about:cache?device=disk (Disk cache device)
c. Press Ctrl+F and try to location the flash file by typing some part of website URL or the flash file name or just .swf. After some hit and trial, you should be able to locate the swf file URL
d. Click the SWF URL to open the Cache Entry Information page. Right click on the link and choose "Save link as"
2. How to save flash in IE browsera. Click Tools - Internet Options
b. In the General Tab, click the Settings button available in the Temporary Internet Files group.
c. Click View Files to open your Temporary Internet Files folder. Depending upon your IE settings, the Temp. folder can contain tens of thousands of files.
d. Click View - Details. Now click View - Arrange Icons By - Internet Address. Depending upon the webpage, there could one or more Flash files (Shockwave Flash Object) under the Inernet Address.
e. Once you find the right flash file, right-click and choose Copy. Then paste the swf file in any other directory. Be sure to
keep the page and IE open to avoid purging of the cache file.
For newbies, I suggest the following approaches:
1. Get a download accelerator like Flashget and tell it to automatically download the shockwave extention (*.swf)
2. Or download a free IE plug-in for saving flash files.
3. How to save Flash files from Opera browser
Just like IE, Opera stores the flash files in the browser cache.
4. Save flash in MyIE2
Either follow the exact procedure for Internet explorer or download the free Flash saver MyIE2 plugin.

I came across an interesting interactive Flash animation, but the usual methods can't seem to save it--it seems to be composed of multiple Flash files. I retrieved them from my cache, but the don't work independently. Any ideas?

Please help me! I don't know if you even read this, but here goes. There is this flash thingy that I desperately want on my hard disk. I have tried all the methods and it won't work. I have located the file both with IE and MF, the extension says .swf and it won't open. It gives a box which says choose program to open with, so there is no such thing as Macromedia! What must I use to download .swf files? Please give a URL. And also: I have noted that my other flash games which I got off someones CD says .exe, but I've renamed mine and it still won't work. Here is the flash thing that I want: http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/mcdonalds/logginit.html please check it out and send me to adriaanjoubert.aj@gmail.com please please please I am such a helpless noob don't leave me here!

Hey, Adriaan!
Flash files are as standard .swf-files but people who put flash stuff on CD's want everybody to view them so they convert them to exe.
To view swf-files either drag them into your browser or do a google search for "offline flash-player"

Use the IE explorer to open the swf files mate !

I use firefox and IE interchangeably. What about saving flash applets embedded in java popups? Is there any way to do this short of getting a plugin to do it for you?

Hi, thanks for the info. I already tried this solution not so long time ago, because I realize that all the flash files already downloaded by the browser.
Written on 30/12/06 8:31 AM
I use Foxfire. The instructions
didn't work as I understood them. So I used copy and paste to put "about:cache?device=disk" into the address bar. There was the cache. This can be saved as a bookmark and all you need to do is is click on the bookmark.

hey how to save shockwave content? its not just a single .swf file, it may be multiple files even multiple .swf files and other images, shockwave content are designed in such a way that it can call in any .swf file or image or a program. Is there any way we can save them? most of the games are now in shockwave rather than simple flash. thanks in advance.

This works on 10minuteresume.com as well. They entice you to their website, spend much time creating a nice resume and find out in the end you have to pay to print it out. Their print preview is in the "Flash Paper" format (.swf extension). I wasn't able to retrieve it using the "Firefox for Newbies" way, but using the "Firefox for Geeks and Power Users", was able to locate the file and print it out without going through their website.

Thanks heaps for this.
Fwiw, in Firefox on PC or Mac, the Save As button in the media list does nothing - nyet, nada.
However, the instructions for IE worked just fine
Written on 14/3/07 7:21 AM
I was not able to get FireFox to SAVE AS - the button just does nothing on both Mac and PC. I was able to get IE to do the save on the PC.
The easiest in fact is Safari on the Mac - in the Window menu, select Activity - it neatly puts each site in it's own disclosure triangle - select the .swf file, then choose Save As in the File menu - only thing is that it saves it as a web archive file, not as /swf - for my purpsoes that is fine, as I want to view the files I have downloaded, and they view fine in Safari

Amit,
I was acually searching for help on how to extract and save swf embedded in excel/word files. Though this was not mentioned in your post, I thought I will add value to it.
I came across http://www.xcelfiles.com/SWF_ExtractFile.html wherein I downloaded an excel sheet which had a script within it. Just browse to the xls/doc file that has the swf file in it and it will be saved to your local disk. Easy!

Thanks alot...
i find out this info is very useful for me... :)

Here's a hint boy's and girls. I recommend looking through the cache as described in the advanced firefox section. Instead of looking for the .swf file, which is usually only used to display the .flv, search for the .flv, or the directory it's in(usually the same as the .swf). It's a little trick I learned, and really effective.

Excellent...I needed to extract photos from Flashplayer...use the intructions for IE...too easy...thank you!!!!
Written on 13/9/07 6:55 PM
The advice in section 'Firefox for Geeks and Power Users' works great for me.
Thanks, Amit!
Written on 2/10/07 9:21 PM
You should definitely mention, EXPLICITLY, that similar thing works for "YOUTUBE VIDEOS". I am sure that will bring in lot more Google traffic. Presently that search leads to Digg page which doesn't mention such a simple approach. Excellent work!

I'm not sure this is the right place to post a question but I'll try. :-) I have found the swf and flv files in my temporary internet files in IE but when I try to paste them into another folder, I get an error that states: Cannot copy file: cannot read from source file or disk. Is there any way around this? Or is this something to do with scripts (I'm not good with computers). The flash I want to save is a cute ad for... dog food... please help.
Written on 16/10/07 4:54 PM
Hi, Thanks for the advice, I've been trying to save a particular .flv file for a while to send to my sister. I have an flv player installed and followed your advanced Firefox method which worked insofar as I could locate the file and managed to save a .flv file. That's where the problem starts, when I try to play the file in the player either by double clicking or choosing a program to open it it doesn't load, instead I get a blue and white moving line along the bottom in what looks like a loading bar and it just stays like that.
Any suggestions, thanks, Andrew.

A very useful webpage. Thank you for posting it.
A suggestion for the IE steps, change step 2.d to be:
"d. Click View - Details. Now click View - Arrange Icons By - Type."
All the swf files will be sorted together, just scroll down to find them all.
