Google IM might use Jabber/XMPP.
After Meetro and Google IM Jabber screenshot, another interesting story is doing the rounds.
There's a host responding at talk.google.com and is actually redirecting to http://www.google.com/talk. [see image]
Tom Servo, tried to connect to talk.google.com using his Trillian client. What he got was a secure XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol, alternatively known as Jabber) server waiting for connections. [see image]
And according to this post, Jabber server listening on port 5222 of 'talk.google.com' [see screenshot]
The server talk.google.com could even be for internal corporate messaging and not actually a public IM service. But since the browser redirects to another page, it doesn't seem to be an internal service. Can some Google employee confirm this.
http://talk.google.com redirects to http://www.google.com/talk - you get a "Not found" error, but the fact the redirection is present means it's going to be used.
If you type http://googleim.google.com, you get a browser error saying it doesn't exist, but on writing http://talk.google.com you are redirected to a Google 404 404 page saying google.com/talk/ was not found on the server. So internally, the Google Talk page exists. via | via
